Ingestion of foods can lead to a variety of adverse reactions, which either represent immunologically mediated, true allergic reactions or are caused by a variety of non-immune pathomechanisms. In addition, 'food allergy' may be an expression of somatization disorders. The diagnostic procedures must take a multitude of causative factors into consideration. Thus, in addition to taking the history, performing skin tests and RAST, oral provocation testing, diets and psychiatric evaluation should also be included in the diagnosis of adverse reactions to foods.
