Proliferation of microcomputers and the advances in data communication technology have accelerated the trend towards the development of distributed computer systems. The design and development of applications in this environment present various oppurtunities and challenges. This paper examines the important phases of System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) to identify the changes required for application development in a distributed environment. Additional steps required in obtaining user requirements have been identified. The commonly used tools in logical system design have been modified, and some available CASE products are examined to judge the ease of implementing these modifications. Finally, issues related to the physical design have been discussed. © 1991.
