Abstract

This report points out that fast-moving technology will result in the creation of multi-million-node computer networks by the end of the decade. This growth of several orders of magnitude will create enormous opportunities for innovative use. It also will render obsolete much of what we now know about designing and controlling systems. Research into fundamental questions of distributed processing is required to support the technology that will be in place in order to achieve its potential.
