Abstract

Quarterly average maps of ammonia and nitrate concentration in rain water over the United States are discussed. These maps indicate that the major sources for both components are near the ground and over land. Comparison with soil maps makes it very likely that the ammonia distribution is primarily controlled by the acidity of the soil. In case of nitrate, no correlation to other geographical parameters could be found, but again, the soil appears to be the most probable source. ©1958. American Geophysical Union.
