In this paper a vibration model to investigate the dynamic response of an elevator system is presented. The model describes the coupled lateral-longitudinal response of an elevator carhoist rope assembly. This description is given in terms of non-linear partial differential equations that accommodate the non-stationary nature of the system. Subsequently, a discrete model with quadratic and cubic non-linear terms is derived to quantify the modal interactions in the system. It is shown that adverse responses may arise. The results confirm that internal resonance phenomena may occur in the system.
