Abstract

Plasma cell dyscrasias, synonymous with monoclonal gammopathy (M protein, MP), represent a heterogeneous group of diseases that are frequently associated with neurological disorders. They include the subclinical monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance to systemic disorders such as amyloidosis, multiple myeloma, cryoglobulinemia, Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, and POEMS syndrome. These diseases appear to be distinctive and, in some, appear to be due to the direct effects of the MP on peripheral nerves. This chapter will outline current knowledge in the field and provide a diagnostic and therapeutic approach to care of these patients.
