Abstract

Education, as Dr. Bertocci points out in his review of Dr. John L. Childs' book, may be defined ‘as the responsible direction and reconstruction of lives in the light of a system of critically conceived values.’ The basis of these values and their integration into a matrix of social organization and human values, is of profound concern to educators. During the course of his review, Dr. Bertocci discusses the various value systems which Dr. Childs summarizes in detail, and critically examines the author's conclusions. Dr. Childs, however, goes further than most writers who deal with the various value systems and the corrolary structures of educational organization which follow. He proposes, ‘in the light of his own conception of man, society, and reality’ a possible basis for a modern philosophy of education. It is with this proposal that Dr. Bertocci is primarily concerned. His penetrating review of Childs' ‘experimentalist’ position is a challenge to all those who are concerned with what are to be the foundation stones of modern education. Dr. Bertocci, a previous contributor to the REVIEW, is a Professor of Philosophy at Boston University. At the present time he is in Italy, studying with Croce. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
