The electromyogram provides a useful tool in the neuromuscular evaluation of infants with meningomyelocele. It allows the estimation of functional versus nonfunctional muscle and predictability of orthopedic deformities due to muscle imbalance. The integrity of the rectal sphincter can be readily studied giving information relevant to the state of the urethral sphincter. The function of transferred muscles can also be analyzed by this technique.
