In 10 children operated on during 1977-86 the esophagus was replaced by the right colon which was brought up into the neck retrosternally. In 6 of them esophageal atresia, and in 4 severe stricture of the esophagus after ingestion of caustic liquids were the indications for operation. There was no mortality; 2-9 years after colonic transplant the patients have normal physical and mental development.
