Abstract

A summary account of results from a survey carried out in 5 drought-prone districts of Maharashtra, as part of a 5-yr research project on agrosilvopastoral development and agroforestry under the Maharashtra State Director of Social Forestry. Aspects covered included crop production (areas cultivated, farm characteristics and labour, amounts of (inadequate) and constraints to crop production), livestock fodder production (livestock holdings, constraints to production, sources of production, and use of tree leaves), fuel, timber and fruit production (sources, supplies and choice of species), and tree planting (amounts, success, choice of species, requirements for seedlings/advice/subsidies, profitability, effect on crops, and community land planting).
