Abstract

Dissipative sliding phenomena associated with an atomic-scale frictional effect at solid surfaces are studied numerically. For both periodic and disordered surface systems, we find complicated sliding velocity-driving force characteristics such as hysteresis and velocity-gaps. We discuss them in terms of disordering effects of sliding lattices and kinetic friction. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
