Abstract
Highlights empirically supported theoretical insights into action control and self-regulatory processes. The authors identify key cognitive constructs capable of differentiating between those who are more or less motivated and more or less likely to act, highlight recent advances in the understanding of action control, discuss the processes involved in goal prioritisation, consider how cognitive theories can be used to tailor interventions for particular groups of people, and briefly highlight issues involved in developing techniques designed to change cognition and health behaviors. The authors note how social cognitive and self-regulation theories can be useful to identify cognitive changes which are most likely to enhance action readiness amongst specified groups. The authors conclude that social cognitive research on motivation and self-regulation has developed a set of empirically validated theoretical tools for researchers and practitioners concerned with promoting health behaviors at an individual and group level.
