Abstract

This book results from a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in Bremen, October 1988. The purpose of the conference was to provide a comprehensive interhemispheric comparison of the geological evolutions of the Arctic and Antarctic areas which led to the late Cainozoic glaciation of the Earth. The 37 papers (abstracted separately) firstly address specific characteristics of polar depositional environments by describing the physiography and plate tectonics of the polar deep sea basins and their continental margins; the polar ice covers as geological agents; and contemporary depositional environments of the polar oceans. The book then goes on to address the Quaternary history and palaeoceanography of the northern polar deep sea basins and of the Southern Ocean; and pre-Quaternary records of polar ocean history. An author and subject index are provided. -after Editors
