This article attempts to go beyond the subject-object relationship with the aid of a new notion of consciousness. Against the background of a critical revision of phenomenological conceptions of consciousness, it argues that the intentional manifestation of things must be grounded on presentational means which remain hidden to consciousness itself. This refers us back to the body and the life of the brain as the hidden ground of consciousness. Although this trend seems to move near to physicalism, it is shown that consciousness, as a region of mere manifestation, differs from its bodily basis. Body and consciousness are relatively identical but at the same time diverse. Finally, the author discusses a perspective which is suggested by the initial considerations and allows us to judge how this paper enables us to advance beyond the subject-object relationship.
