A 69-year-old woman with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) positive chronic myelopathy became comatose with acute meningitis. Most of the cells in the cerebrospinal fluid were similar to those found in adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma, which suggests that there is a close relationship between HTLV-I and this form of meningitis. © 1988 Springer-Verlag.
