Content analysis is the elementary subprocess in subject indexing of documents. Despite this central position in the context of indexing documents, the process of content analysis in theory and practice is not considered enough. The reason of this neglect is situated in the pretended subjective character of the process of understanding. To overcome this problem firstly the exact subject of content analysis is defined. From this point of view methodically resuming approaches and procedures of content analysis can be achieved. Finally some further functions of content analysis are described, e.g. a qualitative evaluation.
