A new participatory rural appraisal tool called the Innovation Tree has been developed. This tool help to visualize and analyse the way in which an innovation is spread over time between community members. It is illustrated that the Innovation Tree is a useful tool to distinguish between different types of innovators, and to better understand the psychological and social dimensions underpinning farmer decision-making in adopting a technology.
