INTEGRATING SITUATIONAL INTEREST AND INTEREST TRAILS WITH MOBILE LEARNING IN AN INFORMAL SETTING

Abstract

Museums play an important role in life-long learning with over 100 million visits in Germany alone. Museum visits provide fertile grounds for interest development and learning not only during formal school-based education but also as free choice activities by pupils and adults. In our contribution we present work in progress that strives to analyze potentials and psychological consequences of using mobile devices to meet situational interests of visitors in museum and for capturing this interest in a personalized exhibition wiki page to enable post-visit reflection and discussion. Due to the high similarity of learning in museums and learning in other informal settings (e.g. high autonomy of the learner, no formal evaluation, fleeting situational interest) the immediate satisfaction of situational interest and assessment/collection of information may be useful for lifelong learning scenarios in general.
