Abstract

This book is neither intended to be a handbook nor a comprehensive treatise on headache. It is not a congress report with verbatim reproduction of lectures and discussions either. The basis for this volume was the International Headache Symposium in Innsbruck which took place from the 21st to 23rd of April, 1974. Every author's responsibility for his own contribution remains unaffected. Even in cases of rather extreme points of view and of opinions which by no means could find the editor's consent, no alterations were made which would have affected the originally intended meaning. It is advisable, however, to read the discussions at the end of each chapter, in order to form an opinion whether a specific contribution can be regarded as conforming to the general standard of present knowledge or rather as the expression of an individual opinion. The discussions had to be condensed and comprehensively structured. The authors hope that they have reached a compromise between completeness and distinct arrangement of the entire material. Several essential aspects of headache are missing in this volume or are only shortly mentioned in the discussion, for example headache of old age, ophthalmological and otolaryngological aspects, a systematic classifying of migraine etc. It is hoped that this book will be useful for both the clinical practitioner and the scientific researcher in this field, because its wide range of contributions is not restricted by the adherence to any particular school of thought. As the symposium itself, this publication is multilingual in so far as English, French and German papers and summaries appear in the volume.
