Account of a study day organized by the l'Association des professionnels de l'information et de la documentation (ADBS) in Paris on 14 October 2003 to facilitate dialogue among researchers, students, industrialists and information professionals on the subject of the Semantic Web (SW). Summarizes contributions covering: the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) definition of SW as "a vast space for the exchange of resources between machines ... "; the integration of sources of diverse data; knowledge management via WS and the multidisciplinary project Acacia; the use of ontologies in comparison with thesauruses; the concepts of annotation and metadata for WS; and the Hi-Touch project applied to tourism. The day concluded with a roundtable on cooperation at which some criticisms were voiced regarding the theoretical approach of the proceedings and the question of costs was raised.
