Lei, Ordem e Tributos: uma abordagem novoinstitucional da formação do estado português
Abstract
Abstract: The New Institutional literature has many studies about the formation of the European non-iberian states, like France, England and Netherlands. This article intends to fulfill the blank space regarding one of the two countries in the Iberian Peninsule: Portugal. We review the economic history of Portugal from the Reconquista to the years just before the maritime expansionism. Our focus are on three characteristics of the formation of the Portuguese State: the monopolization of the law, coercion and of the power to tax. The article shows that the building of the Nation States, normally studied under the New Institutional Economics as a context for the rights to extract fiscal resources fits the Portuguese case.
