Abstract

This article aims to situate j habermas's ethics in the context of contemporary discussion. to the extent that the problem of foundations is historically located, it must necessarily refer to the current state of argumentation. from this standpoint, habermas hesitates between a purely procedural and a transcendental justification of norms. in the end, he leans towards the latter. but for such justification to be valid, the presuppositions of everyday practice must coincide with those of argumentation in general. this assumption receives indirect support from habermas's liberal and democratic political positions.
