Abstract

The present methods for assessing the liquefaction resistance of sand deposits have been criticized. Attempts have been made, based on in situ measurements, to improve such assessments. The most promising technique appears to be the use of acoustic, particularly shear wave, methods. This paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of the various procedures for assessing liquefaction resistance, with particular emphasis on the use of shear waves. It also introduces the results of some shear wave experiments recently conducted at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. -from Author
