Abstract

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (Intervention). The objectives are as follows: 1. To determine the efficacy of lithium in alleviating acute manic symptoms compared to placebo and other drug treatments. 2. To review acceptability of treatment with lithium measured by: a.Overall drop-out from study b.Adherence to study medication c.Patient preference 3. To investigate the adverse effects of lithium treatment, including general prevalence of side effects. Specific unwanted effects that will be studied include: a.Gastrointestinal disturbances b.Tremor c.Polyuria and polydipsia d.Weight gain e.Precipitation of depressive episodes f.Documented renal pathology g.Lithium intoxication 4. To determine overall mortality rates on lithium treatment.
