Maladaptation of sterile Queensland fruit flies used in SIT: from behaviourally challenged to ecologically competent
(2010)
Abstract
This report details the research and development undertaken in Project CT07036 to determine whether sterile, mass-reared Queensland fruit flies used in sterile insect technique programmes in Australia are adapted for survival in the field after release. Laboratory and field cage studies were conducted to identify whether differences existed between wild, mass-reared fertile, and mass-reared sterile flies in relation to their desiccation resistance, use of natural sources of food, activity and predator avoidance, and location and microhabitat in host tree canopies.
