Abstract

Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are common in primary care. Many patients with mild and moderate COPD are managed effectively in their own homes during such events. However, as the disease advances, patients with severe COPD are more likely to develop complications during an exacerbation and might require management in hospital rather than at home. This article looks at how exacerbations are best managed in primary care and the role the nurse prescriber has to play in ensuring appropriate treatment is prescribed as well as promoting self-management plans to enable patients to manage their condition and its symptoms more effectively. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE, 2004) guideline for the management of COPD provides recommendations related to best practice in the management of exacerbations.
