Manuscript Mus. 1/D/506 of the Sächsische Landesbibliothek, Dresden (olim Annaberg, Bibliothek der St. Annenkirche, Ms. 1126)

by Thomas L Noblitt
Musica Disciplina (1974)

Abstract

The shorter of the two early 16th-c. choirbooks copied for use at the Church of St. Ann in Annaberg contains an exclusively sacred repertory of 160 pieces, virtually all of which are specifically liturgical. The settings for the Offices include principally hymns and Magnificats; for the Mass there are complete and partial cycles as well as individual items of both the Proper and Ordinary. Composers represented in the MS are Alexander Agricola, Antoine Brumel, Loyset Compère, Heinrich Isaac, Johannes Notens and W. Raber. Evidence regarding 16th-c. performance practice is provided by the source. Incorporated into the study of this MS are enumerations of concordances and modern editions for many items and, where appropriate, identifications of liturgical models and texts. (Author)
