Mathematical Communities as a Topic and a Method

Abstract

This paper develops a formal definition for the term “mathematical communities,” which has become a widely studied topic in the history of mathe- matics over the past thirty years. It also explores the possibility of developing a methodological tool for observing and analyzing the past from the point of view of mathematical communities.
