Abstract

This book is based on a short course in fluid mechanics taught in the Department of Mathematics of the University of California at Berkeley in 1978 . The first chapter, entitled, 'The equations of Motion', contains sections on Euler's equations, rotation and vorticity, and the Navier Stokes equations. The second chapter, 'Potential flow and slightly viscous flow', includes discussion of potential flow, boundary layers and vortex sheets. The final chapter, 'Gas flow in one dimension' contains sections on characteristics shocks, the Riemann problem and combustion waves. (A.M.T.)
