Abstract

The proceedings of MIE 96, the main medical informatics and telematics event where users meet industry, where decision makers are presented with the available informatics and telematics solutions to major challenges in modern medicine and its delivery, are examined. User requirements are highlighted, and the capabilities of European industry in systems' value added services and telecommunications in support of the health care sector are presented. All aspects of medical informatics is included, with particular focus on human facets in application of information technologies in health care, from ergonomic user interfaces to virtual reality technologies, such as: artificial intelligence, decision support and decision making; demonstration of benefits; education and training; evaluation and validation of system's application; health care planning and evaluation; imaging and signal analysis; information systems, frameworks and architectures; legal and ethical issues; nursing information systems; primary care systems; quality of care and medical audit; regional healthcare systems; rehabilitation and the elderly; resource management, executive information systems; safety and information security; specialized departmental systems; standardization in medical informatics; telemedicine and telematics services; terminology, coding and classification systems; ergonomic user-computer interfaces; and virtual reality in health care.
