Diseases of the mesenteric vasculature can be divided into different types: acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI), chronic mesenteric ischemia (CMI), mesenteric venous thrombosis (MVT), mesenteric aneurysm, and isolated mesenteric artery dissection (IMAD). The incidence of these diseases is expected to increase the upcoming years due to the aging population, the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular disease and due to the widespread use of abdominal imaging techniques which result in more frequently diagnosed mesenteric pathology. Therapy is shifting from invasive open surgery to minimally invasive endovascular procedures. This article describes an up to date overview of the diseases of the mesenteric vasculature.
