Abstract

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a complex of metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors, beginning in puberty period. The aim of the study was to determine clinical and biochemichal features of the MS in order to provide it's early diagnosis. A total of 74 children (42 girls and 32 boys) aged 14.0 ± 1.8 Latin small letter tone two sign. (10-18 years) were included. The prevalence of MS was estimated according WHO Definition (2000). The results show that the obesity is an obligatory component of MS, it is high graded, with central adipose tissue distribution and combined with elevated arterial blood pressure in all children - 74 (100%). Biochemical characteristics of the MS include: basal hyperinsulinemia in 74 (100%), impaired fasting glucose levels in 2 (2.7%), impaired glucose tolerance in 30 (40.5%), hypercholesterolemia in 36 (48.6%) and hypertriglyceridemia - in 74 (100%) of the patients. Microalbuminuria was not found. It was confirmed that MS starts in puberty with obesity. For proper diagnosis biochemical parameters screening and arterial blood pressure measurements are needed. The early detection of MS allows to prevent cardivascilar complications in later life.
