Abstract
Migration between rural peripheral areas and urban central areas is analyzed using the city of Nairobi, Kenya, as an example. The study is based on official Kenyan data for 1969-1979. The role of Nairobi as a focal point for both centripetal and centrifugal migration is discussed, and the volume, intensity, and direction of migration streams are examined. An attempt is also made to evaluate this migration in terms of modernization and dependency theories.
