Abstract

This essay articulates and clarifies notions regarding the moral basis of law common to the judeo-christian tradition. first, the complex interrelationship between law and morality is outlined. second, the suggestion is offered that the conception of freedom central to the religious tradition has continuing validity for secular society. third, traditional morality is contrasted with the 'new morality,' which is a form of utilitarianism.
