Abstract
Moving node finite elements are useful in determining the stress intensity factors using strain energy concepts; in this paper the material kinetic energy is included so that the effects of the material inertia during dynamic crack propagation can be assessed. This is used to determine crack propagation speeds and these compare favourably with those quoted in the literature.
