N-salicyloyl-aspartic acid: A new phenolic compound in grapevines

Abstract

A new phenolic compound was detected in extracts from Vitis riparia and Vitis rupestris as well as in some hybrids of this lineage. The substance was identified as N-salicyloyl-aspartic acid by TLC, IR-, MS-, and NMR-analysis. Its occurrence in nature has not been described before. However, the fungitoxic potential - a trait of many phenolics - seems to be rather low. (H.P. Ruffner, Zuerich)
