The coming out process is a crucial phase of the identity development of homosexual youth. The present study investigates the role that attachment and family functioning plays in modulating the perceived parental reactions. The research participants were 93 adults (41 lesbian and 52 gay men) aged 18 to 30 years old. The results indicate that good family functioning and good attachment, at the time of coming out, promote more positive perceptions of parental reactions. The results confirm the hypothesis that resources within the family system can alleviate the distress of this critical event and support the psychological adjustment of children.
