Abstract

Rapid accumulation of fluid in the pericardial cavity may lead to cardiac tamponade, which is a life-threatening condition. Fluid drainage by pericardiocentesis is the procedure of choice; however, this technique is not without risks. Echo guidance is essential for both diagnosis and direct monitoring of the procedure and helps to minimize the complication rate.
