Personalised metaphor processing in texts on the Web for learning a foreign language
- DOI: 10.1.1.28.6236
Abstract
The paper presents a system developed for the web that assist learning a foreign language, centred on metaphor processing. Metaphors may be of a real help in teaching activities for providing insights that are fundamental in true understanding. In fact, every good teacher uses metaphors in his lectures An approach for the identification, annotation and knowledge-based processing of metaphors in texts on the web is presented. The approach integrates the metaphor theory of Lakoff and Johnson with a multiagent system that gathers relevant texts from the web, with techniques from corpus-based computational linguistics, knowledge acquisition and processing, and advanced mark-up languages on the web (XML and XSL). Metaphors are identified in texts (semi-)automatically, using a knowledge-based framework and annotated with XML. The resulting XML documents are transformed with XSLT in order to obtain personalised presentations according to learner (knowledge-based) models.
