After the identification of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, researchers have broadly studied different medications that could be used to treat COVID-19 infections in order to reduce severity of illness, morbidity, and mortality. While some medications have been shown to reduce severity and possibly death, many medications have shown no improvement in illness. As a result of these studies, very few of the medications studied have been approved for use. This chapter will outline those medications that have been approved, as well as those that have been studied to treat COVID-19 infections. The categories of medications, pathophysiology, effectiveness, side effects, and nursing considerations will be discussed.
