Abstract

In Canada, the platinum-group metals are recovered as a byproduct of the nickel-copper ores mined in the Subury and Shebandowan districts of Ontario and the Thompson, Wabowden and Bird River areas of Manitoba. Canadian production of the platinum group metals, platinum and palladium (the major metals) and rhodium, iridium, ruthenium and osmium, in 1976 was estimated at 13,374,000 grams valued at 48,790,000 compared with 12,417,099 grams in 1975 valued at 56,493,077. Volume of production increased by 7. 7 percent but the dollar value declined 13. 6 percent, largely because of the low price obtained for platinum and palladium in 1976.
