Examines the future markets for hardwoods, mainly in a British context, and suggests that there is a good long-term future for high-grade hardwoods. The main British species and methods of growing are discussed. The general conclusion is that fast growth is desirable and can be best achieved by growing the appropriate broadleaved species on good sites at wide spacing and by keeping the crowns free as far as possible on relatively short rotations. A financial assessment of revenue, expenditure and profitability is presented for hardwoods at wide spacing.
