ABSTRACT Objective: To present the results of a systematic review of literature related to the psychological deterioration of population in Central and Eastern Europe during the transition period subsequent to the fall of the Soviet Block. Method: After developing a systematic search of related bibliography and identifying and describing three types of values: derived from change, related to mental health and mediators between both; we carried out a revision of theoretical models verifying their validity in the analysis of empirical studies. Results: Finally we present an alternative formulation in which subjective factors such as perceived control, explain the relation between macrosocial changes and psychosocial deterioration.
