Publishers and Legal Deposit Libraries Cooperation in the United Kingdom since 1610: effective or not?
Abstract
Paper presented to the Bibliography Section of IFLA at the 68 th IFLA General Conference, held in Glasgow, Scotland, from 1824 August 2002. Describes the history of legal deposit in the United Kingdom since 1610 and the historical role of the Stationers Company. Analyses the rapid extension of legal deposit in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the pioneering activities of Panizzi, and the rationalization achieved in the 1911 Act. The proliferation of electronic material in the last two decades and the legal deposit libraries role in acquiring national heritage material led to a wider debate on the need for new legislation. Examines in detail the Kenny Report, reviews the Voluntary Code of Practice introduced in January 2000, and considers the latest plans for legislation. Cooperation between publishers and the legal deposit libraries ºis a key component in ensuring successful change.
