When is a quantum measurement?

Abstract

The measurement of a quantum system is not consummated until irreversible processes have destroyed all phase coherence between different possible outcomes of that measurement. It is inconsistent to assume that the wavefunction ‘‘collapses’’ before irreversibility sets in.
