Abstract

The essay describes the edition of the Deutsche Volkslieder mit ihren Melodien (»German Folk Songs Including Their Own Melodies«, 1935-1996), contrasting it with the new online publication »Populäre und traditionelle Lieder. Historisch-kritisches Liederlexikon« (»Historical-Critical Song Lexicon« 2005 ff.), both published by the Deutsches Volksliedarchiv. The main point of the article is to highlight aspects regarding the history of science and of institutions. The comparison of both works primarily intends to show their different philological conception, and, particularly, the underlying concept of »Volkslied« (»folk song«).
