A review of the genera of the beetle family Hydraenidae (Coleoptera)
- ISSN: 03752909
Abstract
The genera of the aquatic beetle family Hydraenidae are reviewed and remarks are given on the phylogeny and classification. A key to the present recognized 22 genera is provided. Under each genus are given a complete list of synonyms and subgenera (if any), a short diagnosis, a description, a brief discussion of its taxonomical status, and notes on its distribution and number of described species. A representative species of each genus (except Mesoceration Janssens and Adelphydraena Perkins) is illustrated. Suprageneric taxa are diagnosed and discussed. The genus Limnebius is recorded for the first time from the Australian region. The following names, all indicated as synonyms of Ochthebius by previous authors, are here formally recognized as such: Hymenodes Mulsant, 1844, Bothochius Rey, 1886, Cheilochthebius Kuwert, 1887, Odontochthebius Kuwert, 1887, Camptochthebius Kuwert, 1887, Colpochthebus Kuwert, 1887, and Eccoptochthebius Kuwert, 1887; also, Doryochthebius Kuwert, 1887 is placed as a synonym of Ochthebius. Type species are designated for the following taxa (type species given in its orginal combination in brackets after the genus-group name, followed by its senior synonym, if any): Grammhydraena Kuwert, 1888 (Hydraena flavipes Sturm, 1836 = Hydraena minutissima Stephens, 1829), Sphaenhydraena Kuwert, 1888 (Hydraena gracilis Germar, 1824), Tricholimnebius Kuwert, 1890 (Limnebius papposus Mulsant. 1844), Embololimnebius Kuwert, 1890 (Hydrophilis truncatellus Paykull, 1798 = Hydrophilus truncatellus Thunberg. 1794), Odontolimnebius Kuwert, 1890 (Limnbius truncatulus Thompson, 1853), Crepilimnebius Kuwert, 1890 (Hydrophilus atomus Duftschmid, 1805). Eccoptometopus Peringuey, 1892 (Eccoptometopus nitens Peringuey, 1892), Caloch thebius Kuwert, 1887 (Ochthebius quadricollis Mulsant, 1844), Cheilochthebius Kuwert, 1887 (Ochthebius metallescens Rosenhauer, 1847), Camptochthebius Kuwert, 1887 (Ochthebius nobilis Villa, 1835), Colpochthebius Kuwert, 1887 (Ochthebius punctatus Stephens 1829), Eccoptochthebius Kuwert, 1887 (Ochthebius difficilis Mulsant, 1844), and Cyrtochthebus Kuwert, 1887 (Ochthebius exsculptus Germar, 1824).
