Abstract
Criticisms are offered of davidson's and hintikka's arguments that a definition of truth for a language can serve as a theory of meaning for that language. perhaps such a definition can yield part of such a theory. hard cases are produced to show that hintikka's style of truth definition will not adequately represent the truth-conditions of certain propositional-attitude sentences and sentences containing 'ought'.
