1. Introduction
In the past few years many data sets have been published and made public in what is now
often called the Web of Linked Data, making a step towards the “Web 3.0”: a Web
combining a network of documents and data suitable for both human and machine
processing. In this Web 3.0, programs are expected to give more precise answers to queries
as they will be able to associate a meaning (the semantic) to the information they process.
The XO is a low cost rugged laptop distributed to children in developping countries by the
organization One Laptop Per Child (OLPC). Its operating system, Sugar, currently lacks
dedicated tools to interact with the Web 3.0. The goal of the contributor project
“SemanticXO” is to deliver such tools and make Sugar Web 3.0 proof.
2. Project goals and achievements
SemanticXO aims at enhancing the software found on the XO with Semantic Web
technologies. The expected outcome is that turning the XO into a semantic-web aware
device will create new opportunities for better sharing and consuming information: it will
provide an easy access to the huge, and growing, amount of linked data currently available
on the Web [1] and let the XOs contribute to it. In the context of a project planned to start
up in cooperation with ethno-linguists from the University of Leiden and the the National
Museum of Ethnology (NME) also in Leiden, we developed a prototype for knowledge
acquisition of traditional Amerindian worldviews using serious games (Figure 1). This
application takes advantages of the SemanticXO software stack to represent the knowledge
acquired. More information is available online [2] and in the technical report [2].
