Sensors and sensor networks are an important component in the monitoring and management of environmental systems. In this editorial we outline the main features of the Thematic Issue titled Sensors and the Environment Modelling & ICT challenges which contains eight papers focusing on different aspects of research and development of sensors for environmental systems.
